20th-Jul-2008 06:11 pm - Rats, rabbits and work

Well my Dylan passed away during the night. He had been ill for a while and drugs were having no effect, his brother was taken the same way when he was 9 months so at least Dylan lived to 18 mths. Truffles is looking older by the day but besides from looking older he seems fine healthwise. I am quite lucky that I am adopting 2 of Beckys boys as origonally I was getting 3 from Furryfriends but when everything happened with max I had to pull out. Now although Max is still having problems we are alot more settled than we were, he is no longer living in the bottom of the FN and we have got into a routine now, so we are alot more organised for 2 new arrivals. Anyway I got onto the subject of the babies as now that Dylan has passed that means Rodie only has Truffles as a friend so when Truffles passes Rodie would be left alone with the 2 bullys, so it is good that we are now more settled for getting more. I am thinking about keeping those 2 bullys alone as with Truffles getting older he is less able to stick up for Rodie like he used to and this morning Rodie is sporting a small gash on his eye, one on his man bits and one on his shoulder, they are small, only a few milimetres but still it's not nice for hi. i am going to keep an eye on them all and possibly split the 2 bullys as they get along great with each other.

Max is still not better, his abscesses have not burst and they do not look likely too, the antibiotics have done nothing, I am meant to take him back 2 weeks last tuesday but i will bring that forward a week and will take him on Tuesday. The antibiotics are not doing him much good as he has started pooing a clear sticky liquid, like super glue consistency, i called the vets and they say it is from an inflamed gut caused by the antibiotics. So I wil not be happy if I get sent away again to carry on with the antibiotics as he has been on them 3 weeks and it has done bugger all, so whats the point in continuing with just that??

My place of work is moving buildings tomorrow. It is only an extra 4 miles away but it is 4 miles in the wrong direction. It used to be central Brighton and was in the main hub for all transport. Now it will take 2 buses to get there so I will have to drive, but it is a residential area with ALOT of resticted parking so finding somewhere to park will be a huge hassel, there are no public carparks nearby either. They have parking underneath but only a set amount which is for carsharers only, however as everyone in my area works shifts we cannot carshare.
I already have to leave at 7.30 to get to work for 9 due to traffic (normlly takes 10 mins outside rush hour!!) But now I will need to leave at around 7, and it will take me alot longer to get home so in all I will lose around an extra 1hr 30 of my day on top of the 2hrs 30 I already spend travelling each day, I wouldn't mind if the money was great or I enjoyed my job. But the money is good but not great and although I sort f enjoy my job I do not like it and do not think it's worth the extra journey. I did manage to change my hours so I will be doing longer hours on a saturday (9-4 instead of 9-2) and doing half hour lunches during the week so I will be working in effect 4 and a half days finishing at 2.30 on a friday. So I miss the traffic on the Saturday, and miss the traffic home on a Friday and have a day off during the week.

15th-Jul-2008 10:23 am - Utterly fed up!
Before I rant I have to say that I do love my animals and wouldn't be without them. But just recently I am sick to death of vets trips!!
So far we have dealt with max and his flystrike and Max's abscess, are still waiting for him to come off antibiotics so we can do a blood test to look at his possible kidney problems. Well on top of that his abscess has started to heal but another hard pea sized lump appeared yesterday on his toe (same foot) someone on rabbits united had the same thing and they are now dealing with Osteomyelitis whatever that is. He has also started pooing a weird mucus along with his normal poo which someone else has mentioned could be enteritis. He also refuses to eat any hay at all, i have tried everything, but he has always been like this since we got him and his teeth have been checked and he eats his pellets and veg. So we are off to the vets again today.

Truffles the rat also has a hard pea-sized lump on his shoulder and when we went to the vets with him a while ago they said it wasn't a tumour and put him on antibiotics as they suspected an abscess with him, well it hasn't got bigger and hasn't got smaller and hasn't burst so back we go with him again. He is quite old now around 30 months old and starting to look it as his fur is thinning. Dylan is still with us but looking the worst for it, he still comes over to the door (very slowly) to say hello and is still eating so I will not PTS until he is unable to enjoy life anymore.

I am so fed up, my credit card bill is getting bigger as I have had to pay for my car tax, vets treatment, Maxs dog crate on it, I also bought all my camera gear on my card as it had a zero balance at the time, if I had known all this was going to happen I wouldn't have bought it yet, and because all this has happened I haven't even had much chance to use it since I got back from holiday .

On a good note I shall be starting to help eastbourne rabbit rescue soon, I shall be visting on a monthly/fortnightly basis to take photos of the buns and post them/update them on rabbit rehome and on the rabbits united forum rabbits in need section.
I just found out my dad's friends wife works at my favourite local rescue/animal sanctuary Raystede. which I have been visiting since I was small. They are looking for volunteers and happy to accept on a one day a week basis so I am also going to apply for that, going to ask my vet if he can be a reference for me, I have been down there enough!!

Max was hopping next to Odo (Murdoch's) cage the other day and Odo bog-brushed at him..he he I love my special boy. Considering he is around 2 years old now he is showing no signs of slowing down and on the running around/playful front could give my young girls a run for ther money.
As my boys are slowing down they have been shut in the top part of the ferret nation and Odo has been moved out of the critter 2 and into the bottom of the FN so he has lots of space to himself to run around and play in, which he seems to appreciate as the critter 2 doesn't give him much floor space.

I also want to add a level to Max's dog crate but don't want a wooden one, so I will be buying a kids play table, that way he can snuggle underneath it but also has another level to climb on. Being plastic it also won't soack up the wee which is good. just need to find somewhere to buy one.

Sighhhhh i'm so worn out, may go and have a daytime nap, I don't normally do that on my days off but I think I might today.

What aspect of your personality could use a little work?

My Patience! I am a very impatient person and hate explaining things over and get irritated by people that don't get stuff (maybe my new job as a coach and team manager is not the best one for me to be chosen for)
I hate waiting for things, once my mind is made up to do/buy something I have to do it and get it there and then and get fidgety and restless if I can't.
24th-Feb-2008 04:42 pm - Murdochs intros

Well after discovering that he hates my girls with a passion, I have been having a think about Murdoch. At Aimlessdesires he hated boys but was ok with girls, I thought since he hates my girls I might try with with a laid back boy (bad idea I hear you thinking) So I choose Truffles to be the victim of choice, he was my first rat from this group and has endured 5 adult buck to buck intros and was ok in all of them, being the only one to choose to lay down and sleep with the newbie on 4 of those first intros.
I get a carrier ready have my tea towels to hand and plonk them in. There was sniffing, bog brushing, some sort of 'shaking that ass' type of dance from Murdoch, boxing and a couple of fights. Mostly Truffles was just staring at him thinking 'what the hell are you doing, when you are quite finished I would like to lay down and sleep'
Result ended in a cut leg on Truffles which was only small and as I was watching with a close beady eye at all times and still didn't see it happen I can only assume it must have caught a claw or tooth in a small scuffle. The end result was that he reacted to Truffles MUCH better than the girls, he was alot less aggressive and despite the cut leg they were in there for 10-15 mins and didn't kill each other. At the start of intros he had a sniff and did some fluffed up bum shoving but then sat and had a wash twice, was nosing around the carrier and trying to see what was outside the carrier which he never did with the girls.
I think I will try him with Truffles again for 5 mins this time, then 10 mins and so on.

22nd-Feb-2008 06:17 pm(no subject)
Well I found out today that I have got my new job...yay. Technically it's not a new job as it's in the same department on the same pay. But I am now the new WSG leader which means I am in charge of running the Work Support Group which is basically new starters. At the moment I am a monkey doing the mundane  stuff evryone does, the next stup up from that is a team captain which helps my manager run her team, the next step from that is a Team manager who runs the team. In effect I am now a teaam captain level (which is the level of pay I was already on) but will be doing a team manager role. It is a 3 month secondmen but at least it is something different and will be a great experience to put on my cv.

On the rat front I checked Mischief today and I cannot see any cut on her at all, it was definately there yesterday!! So I think it must have been a stray claw that caught the skin and nicked a vein, so either way she is still being entered tomorrow and at least she doesn't have to suffer through a huge gash. Murdoch is like a cat, he likes nothing better than curling up on the sofa facing the TV, I got up to pop upstairs and he started panicking and trying to get to me, when I came back he ran straight onto me, up to face and had a good sniff then went back to his spot curled up on the sofa, I think I am seen as his cagemate.

A question about LJ - Can you all see the messages that have been sent to me? as a couple of you that have sent messages/comments to me seem to be answering each other. I don't mind I am just confused about how this site works still (wishes she had a blushing smiley, and a smiley smiley)
21st-Feb-2008 08:24 pm - Why?
Why do rats do this, it is my first time entering a show and I have one entered in pets who I know will not win as I have met the licky competition and I entered my himi girl in varieties, she was the one that had a shot of at least coming somewhere. However during intros she has now ended up with a big gash on her side which covered my hands in blood between me grabbing her and running to the bathroom, so not only does that muck up my intros but I now can't enter her.  Luckily it doesn't appear to be too deep however trying to get a wriggly scared girl to sit still enough that I can see the wound from the red wet fur is near impossible but i did manage to wash it best I could and she is now back in the cage licking her wounds (literally) But she still found time to hassle me for a yoggie and while typing she is now wandering around causing mischief so I am sure she is ok. Once I get a better look at the wound I may still bring her as a shoulder rat if it is a superficial cut (the type that bleed loads but aren't actually that bad) but obviously if it is a deep wound I will leave her at home. In which case I may bring Buffy my double rex but be warned she is scratched quite abit too, but hers are only small scratches as she has no fur to protect her so she is fine. My baby black rex Minnie is coming and I am still deciding whether to take Moomin (not sure I handle 2 babies running everywhere)
I am going to leave Merdoch a week or 2 to give him more time for the hormones to calm down after the neutering before trying intros again.
